good morning, everyone. i'm here with meteorologist craig herrera. a lot of people are getting up wondering what to do this weekend. it all depends on where you are going. exactly. the rain is back in the forecast late tonight through tomorrow morning. today the fog is the story. 62 degrees in san francisco, but the visibility is an issue for san francisco and places north of there. you have low visibility about a half mile. be careful for that. also delays at sfo. 52 minutes for arriving flights due to the low ceiling. this is the wide perspective of the radar with a nice front moving into california and oregon. it is well north of us, but by later this afternoon it is closer to mendocino county. it is an overnight event for the north end of the bay. tomorrow it gets closer to oakland and through redwood city. san jose, los gatos, those places south probably are not

getting anything but mist and drizzle during the morning hoursle. a quarter inch from san francisco north. a half inch to an inch up through santa rosa and ukiah. it will still be a little muggy today with 70s and 80s for highs. i'll go over the seven-day in a bit. thank you very much. election day is turning yet to another violent day in afghanistan. the polls have just closed but not before five separate rocket attacks were launched in kabul as people attempted to vote in the country's parliamentary election. rockets struck other major cities throughout the country as well. several people were killed by these attacks. the violence forced some centers to close. more than 2500 candidates are fighting for 249 seats in parliament. here at home nine days after a san bruno neighborhood was leveled by a gas pipeline explosion we still know very little about what triggered that

blast. but now a critical word is emerging. corrosion. newly discovered documents suggest liquid corrosion could have weakened the gas pipeline. in another development the public utilities commission wants pg&e to hand over the most dangerous pipelines. monty francis has our story. >> that's very scary. that's very scary. >> reporter: tim gutierrez is one of a handful of residents living near the explosion site in san bruno who claims he smelled gas in the neighborhood in the days and weeks prior to the blast. pg&e is with holding a list of the most 100 vulnerable sites in the pipeline system. he says it is information he would like to have had before the disaster that leveled his neighborhood. >> we all have the right to know. everybody wants to feel safe. it is not like, oh, my god, what is that sound? you don't want to live life like that. >> reporter: pg&e was asked to

turn over the list as early as friday, but they were told releasing the information would present a threat to national security. >> i think the people and the residents have a right to know as to where the pipes are to make a conscious decision, should i live here? >> reporter: it is ridiculous to say they don't want to give information out for terrorism. i mean, come on now. >> reporter: now the public utility's commission that regulates pg&e is demanding a list of the pipe segments considered to be at the highest list of failure. the senator says if they get the information it would be made public. public documents revealing four of the most vulnerable line, line 132, the one involved in last week's explosion, line 131 running from the south bay to the delta, 107 to livermore, and 108 to sacramento. meanwhile, pg&e admitted a mixture of water and oil was corroding the pipeline that ruptured in san bruno. >> corrosion can ultimately

cause the eroding of metal with metal pipes. that's why there's the concern, and that's why it is something we continually inspect for. >> reporter: but the company says it is up to federal investigators to determine whether corrosion caused the pipe to fail. monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> the area remains rattled to this day. crestmore school was evacuated yesterday after someone reported smelling gas, even though pg&e couldn't find a leak students and staff were sent home just in case. >> you hear of any noise and you jump. something fell on my porch the other day and i went that far up. as the investigation continues to unfold into what went wrong, stay with nbc bay area news. we have dedicated a special section on our website. nbcbayarea.com to the san bruno explosion. the teen at the wheel of yesterday's deadly car crash in nevada has been arrested for drunk driving and gross

vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. police say five nevada high school teens were in this bmw before noon yesterday when the car spun out in front of the tractor-trailer hauling cattle. one teen sitting in the back of the car died instantly. three others were seriously hurt. police found beer cans in the car. the driver of the truck was not seriously injured. he even ran to help the teens right after the crash. a santa clara man is behind bars this morning. police say he's a serial bank robber. 32-year-old cyrus butecha is accused of pulling off five holdups in santa clara, san jose and mountain view. it is her first weekend of freedom in more than a year, and sarah shourd is spending it in new york with her mother. she was released this week by the iranian government after being held last summer accused of being a spy. meanwhile, no word this morning if or when shourd will be

reunited with shane bauer or josh fattal. iran's foreign minister says he's hearing of no plans to release them. the u.s. issued a challenge to iran's president to bring the two men with him to new york when he attends the united nation's general assembly next week. all three berkeley grads were hiking along the iranian border when they were captured and jailed on espionage charges last year. still ahead on "today in the bay," who is following you online and trading in your personal information. and why you should care about the data being collected. plus, fighting for justice. natalee halloway's mother confronts the man she hopes has the answers to her daughter's disappearance.

>> yes. xbox games. >> reporter: this is just one company among many involved in the growing business of tracking what you buy, what you search for and sometimes simply what you look at online. this website, by the way, allows you to see what it has collected. the information is then packaged up and auctioned off to internet advertisers looking to better target their ads. meaning if collin happens to be looking at jewelry one day, and a jewelry ad pops up a day later, it is likely not a coincidence. >> it is kind of weird to have my information out there about what i'm looking at on my computer. >> reporter: how do companies get this information? according to a recent wall street journal poll investigation, just by visiting the 50 most popular websites, more than 3,000 pieces of third-party tracking technology are downloaded onto a user's computer. some of it simple, some very complex. almost all of it without the

user's knowledge. >> it is very unusual to find sites that you don't have the third-party tracking embedded in them. >> reporter: peter is from san francisco's electronic frontier foundation. >> i think most people have no idea that this is happening. and when you show them evidence of the information that has been collected about them, their jaw drops. it is quite horrifying to realize that someone you've never heard of knows all this stuff about you. >> reporter: well, not about you exactly. about your computer. the data collected industry is quick to point out all the information is tied to an identifying number, not a name. what's more, there's a net benefit to all the data collection, they bring ads to your computer you may care about. >> this supports the experience that consumers want to have. and if the consumer wouldn't

i bet what matters to you right now is the weather forecast. particularly this one gets interesting. it is not always dry. it is a little wet. we'll start with the golden gate bridge. >> quite a bit of fog out there, yeah. the mist and the drizzle, the windshield wipers are going at times. we'll have them going from the golden gate and san francisco and places north of there. look at the cars passing over. you can see the wet roadways. take it easy out there. a little slower. of course, we have not had a whole lot of rain come through, so we have slick roads throughout the day tomorrow. there's a live look at oakland. we have a lot of mist here as well with the darker clouds producing rain drops. not real measurable this morning, but still rather cool and a little bit wet at times. right over the sunol grade, the

same story with headlights going. if you are driving during the day, it is the law now to have the headlights on the if your windshield wipers are going. tomorrow, a little cooler with showers to the north end of the bay. next week is breezy with afternoon sunshine. there are delays at sfo for 52 minutes for arriving flights. some arriving flights. nothing to report at san jose or oakland, but call ahead of time if you are waiting for somebody to come in. especially with sfo and the delays coming in. the visibility is along the peninsula at 9 miles. santa rosa, 2 miles. thick fog across the north end of the bay. right now we have the 60s out there. you can feel the moisture in the air muggy at times. same story for today. there's the front right in through here. it starts to come onshore throughout the morning hours, but most of this is for ukiah and north of there. this is the storm itself with the front right here.

there's another one on its heels with colder air and unstable air to give us a couple lightning strikes through tomorrow. meantime, we have a warm front ahead of the cold front to give us some warm air coming in from the south. that's causing the muggy conditions. then through the day tomorrow, the rain that gets into the north end of the bay and places north of there will give us a quarter inch and more as we get into nap in county. we will get more rain there. this is tomorrow. also, lightning strikes. we'll watch for that tomorrow as the front passes throughout the day tomorrow. futurecast, 8:00 a.m., you can see the rain to the north end of the bay. the heaviest rain near you rica. sunday afternoon we have rain for san francisco and places north. by 8:00 p.m. here's your legend. a half inch to one inch for ukiah and places north of there. south of there, a quarter of an inch or tenth of an inch. not a whole lot for the south end of the bay. that's on tomorrow, sunday. meantime, mostly dry for san francisco this afternoon, 65.

that's after the morning mist and drizzle. 75 for livermore. close to 79 in napa. seven-day forecast, a couple showers through the north end of the bay tomorrow. if you are out late tonight, you could get some of that. then we clear out tomorrow night back to the 70s and a couple 80s by monday. then we stay with the trend through the week. >> that's fall as we like it. >> yeah, enjoy it. organizers want san francisco's annual bay to breakers event to be less like mardi gras and more like a foot race. starting next week or next year the race will be dry. many people have complained about litter and the drunkenness. typically 20,000 people finish the race, but an extra 25,000 to 50,000 take part. also, the number of race participants will be capped at

so facing brett anderson, probably not top on their wish list right now with the a's lefty trying to cool off the hottest team in baseball since the all-star break. anderson dialed in to hit michael cuddyer looking. one earned run, four hits, five ks. top of the six now, the 2-1, a's. jack hayes had his 100th homer earlier. now he's at 101. the a's get the win 3-1. well, two games, two times scoring 52 points, two wins and a national ranking. the call bear started the season strong, but what happened when they hit the road and found a more challenging opponent? last night in nevada we found out. the bears were facing the wolf pack who has no problem racking up the points. third quarter, 24-14, nevada. how about this jog down the field? former 50-yard and diva house.

rain. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm going to meteorologist craig herrera. the rain, how much do you get in the bay? we have a quarter an inch, and most of it will happen tonight into tomorrow. the rain, the measurable rain is coming in late tonight through tomorrow. most of it for the north end of the bay. we pointed this out, 52-minute delays for arriving flights at sfo due to low ceilings and thick fog in the 60s. right now highs today into the 70s. near 80. the mug by the feeling we had yesterday is going to be with us again today. we'll start to see rain in the north end of the bay with lightning strikes around here as well. i'll go over the seven-day forecast after the weekend. it will be pretty mild a couple of days. tonight a funeral will be

held for 20-year-old jessica morales. she's among the four people who died last week. a victim of the natural gas explosion and subsequent fire in san bruno. last night family and friends gathered at a private vigil for the young woman. as george reports, many remain in shock over her death. >> i feel like i just lost my own daughter. i really am going to miss her. >> reporter: maria and her daughter say their hearts are crushed. they joined dozens of family and friends who stopped by doug and sarah mortuary to remember 20-year-old jessica morales. >> it is such a shame to see such a young person gone and hear people talk about her in past tense when i had seen her an hour and a half before she died. >> reporter: morales died when the gas pipeline exploded near her boyfriend's home in san bruno last thursday. the heat and smoke were too

much. >> i can't let go yet. i'm not ready. a lot of people say you have to let go, you have to, but i'm not ready yet. >> reporter: her friends shared their thoughts at the vigil. bernadette wanted to let everyone know how she felt. >> she was so beautiful. >> reporter: they say remembering her is tough. one minute they are happy, the next they are fighting back the tears. >> we all smile when we remember her beautiful smile, but crying when you think about her young age and that she's gone now and never got to finish what she wanted to do with her life. >> so what is next for the san bruno community? on sunday nine bands will play an outdoor benefit concert. all fund-raised will go to the victims. and crews could start clearing the ruins of the 31 homes destroyed as soon as thursday. the county health leaders are concerned about potentially dangerous metals and am best toast in the burned homes.

the contra costa sheriff investigators are looking for a whom who was sexually assaulted in her apartment complex. the sheriff's office says thursday's attack is not related to the previous string of assaults. they arrested the man for those and he remains behind bars on $12 million bail. in this latest incident, the 27-year-old woman was entering her apartment in the complex at about 6:00 p.m. thursday when the suspect forced his way inside. investigators are checking security camera footage to see if those cameras captured any images of the attacker. residents of one san francisco neighborhood want to stop the violation they are seeing every day. so people who live in oakdale avenue are having a block party today. that begins at 10:00 this morning to include poster-sized photographs of 60 people in the neighborhood whose lives ended

violently. this evening the block party will become a candlelight vigil to remember those who lost their lives in the neighborhood. in less than 48 hours the bay area's first expressed holding will debut on 680 through the fremont area. work crews are out on the freeway this morning striping the lanes and putting finishing touches on the new lane. the so-called all me a county lanes will reopen in sunol and will end at highway 237. sew lowe motorists who use the lane will pay an electronic toll with their fast track transponder. for carpoolers it will be free. if you are interesting in trying it, the lane operates from 5:00 a.m. 08:00 p.m. charges are filed through fast track. the amount events are issued

through a car speaker. this week we learned hole sales hit an 18-year low and scores of homes continue to fall into foreclosure. today a free foreclosure clinic will be held at the george center in san jose. the clinic is being presented by the vietnamese bar association and going with california and the help center of san jose. the event starts at 9:30 this morning. if you are having trouble finding a job, maybe you are looking in the wrong place. in the five fields they have added jobs in california over the past year. educational services, health services, mining, logging and professional business services. that's the best news of the latest unemployment. it shows an economy continuing to sink. the unemployment rate is up to 12.4%. coming up on "today in the

welcome back to the broadcast. we were just talking about the express lanes coming into 680 in sunol. that's the stretch of freeway you're looking at right now on this saturday morning. 7:38 is the time. in health news this morning a study from the centers of disease control finds the majority of teens getting formal sex education classes, but for a third of them a lesson in birth control is not in the curriculum. the study is based on 2800 teens from 2006 to 2008.

about 97% said they received some kind of sex ed. 2/3 received information on birth control as well as guidance on sexually transmitted diseases. the number of teen who is hear about birth control could rise as federal funding for sex education has been shifted in recent years to programs that address both abstinence and birth control. researchers from uc berkeley find girls living in the home with a biological father tend to hit puberty at an early age. the average age has dropped in recent years partly because of the childhood obesity epidemic. girls who wagon more tend to start the process earlier. the berkeley style of over 400 girls linked early on puberty to the absence of fathers, but only for those living in high-income households. researchers say more work is needed on the subject. women around the world are becoming more educated, and that's helping to save the lives of their children.

a university of washington study found especially poor countries with better educated mothers are more likely to understand the benefit of vaccines and mosquito nets. they are more likely to take a child to the clinic early and to follow instruction. still ahead, stargazers are in for a rare site. that's why jupiter is about to make the closest path to earth in nearly 50 years. [ male announcer ] jerry brown's good old days.

but what really happened? cnn -- not me -- cnn says his assertion about his tax record was "just plain wrong." jerry brown went out there and took credit for the fact that the people of california voted for proposition 13, which lowered taxes, which he opposed. and now he's going around taking credit for it. he raised taxes as governor of california. he had a surplus when he took office and a deficit when he left. he doesn't tell the people the truth.

look at the golden gate bridge. you can't make it out at times. aside from the headlights, the windshield wipers are going as well. it is a rather damp start to the morning all over the bay area, even the south bay and east bay. it is right over oakland. you can see high clouds and low clouds. a good mix of clouds coming through today. not just the fog. so we do have quite a bit of low ceilings out there as well. look agency noelle. look agency look at sinol. there's the delays at sfo. the weather headlines, first off, getting through the morning, we are going to manage some mist and drizzle during the morning hours. it is later this afternoon that we actually start to see a little bit of open in the clouds. we are getting the sunshine going. then tomorrow we get some of the fog and the rain tomorrow,

especially for places in san francisco and north. and then the breeze comes back next week. delays at sfo are 52 minutes for some arriving flights. none at san jose or oakland. visibility is down to two miles or so for santa rosa and into the hills as well. through the north end of the bay, napa county and sonoma county, watch for the low visibility issues as well this morning. look at the numbers. 60s right now. it is a little muggy. you have all the cloud over cover out there. you will feel the warm air coming in. there's the warm air getting pulled up from the south and southwest. the front comes up, the warm front comes up ahead of the cold front. the cold front is in here, and all the cold flont front is bottled up behind it. the clouds behind on this storm right here, notice they are little pieces of popcorn. that's the cold unstable air that comes through tomorrow. and it will give us lightning

strikes for the north end of the bay. there's the warm front. we have the warm, humid air in place today. tomorrow the cold front comes through with the rain from san francisco and places north of there. and then the lightning as well. so we'll watch for the lightning, especially here in mendocino county. the humidity in place will make it feel a little muggy today. 65 in san francisco. again, the rain is happening for places north of there. once you get to santa rosa, you are looking at a quarter to half inch. and closer to ukiah and the hills, about an inch. most of this is for the north end of the bay. the seven-day forecast, there are the 70s tomorrow. then next week breezy, mild and a couple 80s on monday. thank you very must have. it is hard to think of something 368 miles away as really close, but that's how far away the planet jupiter will be from earth on monday night looking

bigger and brighter than we have seen it. it's the closest it has come in 47 years. watch for it all month. a rising low in the eastern sky shortly after twilight. it won't be this close again until 2022. monday is the best night for viewing with the planet at the closest around midnight. up next on "today in the bay," a plea deal for parents in going back to jail for getting caught with cocaine.

with prosecutors to keep her out of jail. she pleaded guilty to the august 27th arrest. she was arrested after a small plastic bag containing cocaine fell out of her purse. with the guilty plea, hilton will serve a year of probation. on the other hand, it could be back to jail for lindsay lohan. the actress admitted last night on her twitter page she failed a court-ordered drug test. a judge ordered 90 days in jail for violating her probation in a drunk driving case. she served two weeks and was released on the condition to receive drug treatment and submit to random drug testing. she tweeted she is ready to accept the consequences. then it looks like the octomom needs help with all the kids after all. 14 kids and no job is adding up to homelessness and welfare for nadya suleman. she and her children rent a home near anaheim, but she can't make the rest. so her landlord can't pay the mortgage meaning the house is headed for foreclosure. without a reality show to help pay her bills, suleman will
